Bitstream on the other hand, sends the signal untouched to your receiver to process rather than letting the Xbox handle it.

I would use LPCM when playing games just cause it gives you surround sound with zero latency issues. But to your question, it does reduce the volume. Same level as regular uncompressed stereo.
