In patients with underlying metabolic risk factors, a significant amount of cryptogenic cirrhosis represents “burnt out fatty liver disease”, or NAFLD/NASH with only hepatic fibrosis on histopathology (Cotter and Rinella 2024). An earlier diagnosis of IPF is a prerequisite for earlier treatment and, potentially, improvement of the long-term clinical outcome of this progressive and ultimately fatal disease.
